Wire Electrical Disharge Machining (Wire EDM)
*Should not be confused with RAM EDM or Sinker EDM
The Benefits of the Wire EDM process:
- Accurate to +/- .0001" (Sometimes better)
- Waterjet, Laser or Plamsa usually have tolerances of +/ .003"
- Complex taper cuts
- Surface Roughness to 2 micron
- The integrity of the part is not affected by any heat transfer, such as hardness
- No burrs
- Submersion in de-ionized water allows for better arc stability and control of the temperature of the part
A single strand of metal wire (usually brass) is used
Typically the wire diameter ranges from .004" to .012"
- This allows for extremely tight corners
Any conductvie material can be cut, regardless of:
-Hardness
-Reflection
-thickness (only limited to the height of the Z axis)
-Carbide, Hardened Steel, Titanium, Aluminum, Brass even Conductive Ceramics are just a few examples
